Different States, Different Votes
California’s environmental and other laws are the most strict in the country, and the Antelope Valley shares a state border with one of the least restrictive states. Many of our north-of-the-border neighbors tell us they specifically live in Nevada rather than California precisely because they want to live where regulations are more sparse.
The process that established the State and Mono County regulations took more than two years, many public policy meetings here in the Antelope Valley and across the State/County, as well as three public votes in Mono County alone. The Antelope Valley cannabis votes were overwhelmingly favorable, even when compared to the rest of Mono County. Just across the line in Douglas County, NV, County Commissioners voted against allowing commercial cannabis. Knowing this makes the pushback from our nearest Nevada neighbors easier to understand.
